RecycleMania Sweeps the Nation

RecycleMania is all about getting schools from across the nation to recycle more.  RecycleMania helps college students get involved in recycling.  It involves friendly competition by placing fun recycling programs in colleges and universities across the United States and Canada.

The competition is easy and helps young people get involved in the importance of recycling.  Over an 8-week period each spring, schools report the amount of recycling and trash collected each week.  The schools are then ranked in various categories based on who recycles the most on a per capita basis.  RecycleMania also tracks which schools have the best recycling rate as a percentage of total waste, as well as the least amount of combined trash and recycling.  Each week, competitors can check the RecycleMania website to see where they rank.

There are many inexpensive, fun ways to plan activities around recycling.  Examples include pledge cards, volunteers to help clean up after events, friendly dorm competitions and much more.  RecycleMania has made a huge impact over the past few months.  The winning schools receive national recognition in each category on the company website.  The winners receive an award made out of recyclable materials.  They also win the right to host that category’s special traveling trophy for the coming year.  There were 461 schools that participated in the 2014 RecycleMania Tournament.  Here is the list of winners:

  • Grand Champion – Antioch University Seattle (WA)
  • Per Capita Classic – Kalamazoo College (MI)
  • Gorilla – Rutgers University (NJ)
  • Waste Minimum – Valencia Community College (FL)
  • Paper – Westfield State University (MA)
  • Corrugated Cardboard – U.S. Military Academy (NY)
  • Bottles and Cans – Kalamazoo College (MI)
  • Food Services Organics – Bard College (NY)

For a complete description and list of the 2014 tournament, please see the website for more information. RecycleMania is undoubtedly changing the way people think about recycling and making it fun in the process.

Recycling is one of the most important things people can do to help the environment.  This is a fun way to get the point across.  By getting colleges and universities involved, it helps teach young adults the importance of recycling.  Hopefully, it is something that they will continue as they venture out into the world after college.
